We believe that everyone is different and special. We believe that learning is exciting and an intrinsic part of children's play and of all that they enjoy.

It is our intention to instil a lifelong love of learning and to foster in each child the vital social skills needed to achieve positive lifelong development and the ability to contribute to the wider community.

  • We believe in the strength of the individual and the family unit and identify that co-operative support aids and nurtures that strength and independence. We encourage parents and friends from the locality to become actively involved in the life of the Centre so that we can understand and celebrate diversity, learning from and delighting in the achievements and successes of all
  • We believe exploration and enquiry in early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives: early years education it is not just a preparation for the next stage – it is vitally important in itself.
  • We believe that everyone should be respected and valued, so that they will value themselves and know how to respect and value similarities and differences in others. 
  • We believe that young children learn most effectively through the medium of play and need opportunities to explore both the indoor and the outdoor environment.
  • We believe that all children should have equal access to our curriculum.

Equalities Targets

The Governors and Practitioners of Histon Early Years Centre have undertaken an equalities audit; our objectives for 2015-2018 are:

  • To help all children, specifically boys, to develop their language skills and sustain their task involvement by supporting them in small, focused activity sessions.  We will maximise targeted areas of interest, which in turn will ensure continuity of support for all our learners to realise their full potential.
  • To offer all stakeholders the opportunities to extend their understanding, appreciation and respect for the cultural heritage of those from different socio-economic, religious and ethnic backgrounds.  We will achieve this target by sharing stories, images and information; to better inform our knowledge and awareness.

2016-17 Equalities Statement

  • For staff to work together implementing ways of supporting children who attend Histon Early Years Centre who speak languages other than those spoken by our staff.
  • To focus on how we implement visual support in children’s early stages of learning to settle children, help them to understand basic rules and routines and establish a good learning platform for their future educational achievements.
  • For staff to make strong relationships with parents of children speaking languages other than English (where language is a barrier) as they do with parents that speak English.
